One of the first questions I am asked when shooting with a digital camera (after the “which camera do you use, question), is, what format should I shoot? Tiff, High Res JPEG, RAW etc. And the answer is very simple. RAW! There is NO other option. And you need to make sure that you are using the highest resolution (megapixels) available on your camera.

You should only be using a digital SLR (DSLR) camera, with the most powerful (expensive) flash available for your system. When you shoot a wedding, you will need to use flash for basically every shot you take. Indoors and out, even in bright sunlight. The flash will light dark subjects inside and when you are outside, it will fill in the shadows of your subject, and make the resulting photos look their best.

A very important point to remember when you photograph the bride, is to make sure that there is lots of detail in the brides dress. With digital cameras, the sensor cannot record as wide a range of light to dark as with film, and whites in particular, can be very challenging to record with detail. This is where you need to be able to balance the flash with the available light to get acceptable results. Otherwise, you may have some angry people calling you after the event. And you cannot arrange a do-over for a wedding, it is a one shot deal. So, make sure you do lots of practice before your first real, paying event. A good way to practice is to have you wife/girlfriend/kids dress up in white clothes and take lots of shots and note the settings you need to get detail in the dress, and good skin tones on the brides face.

Whenever possible, set up the kids in the bridal party by themselves. These kinds of photos will sell to the parents, the bride and groom and many other family members, especially the grandparents. Part of your job is to not just take good photos, but to take photos that will sell and keep you in a job and allow you to buy more equipment as you need it. You should always take individual shots of each kid and have the parents help to get them comfortable so you can get some good shots. Always try to choose an interesting background where possible. In this article, I will explain some technical considerations of picture taking. Available light photography and many people often have questions about the aperture and how to use it effectively.

Available light photography is pretty much as the term says. You take photos using just the available light in the scene. You do not use the flash on the camera or other portable light sources. However, by using s reflector, you can redirect, or model, the light to give a more pleasing and natural effect. In my blog, the address is below in the resource box, you will see some sample photos, including a scene from a wedding which does not use a flash.

If you look carefully at the photo, you will notice some very obvious things about the light. Overall, the light is very even right across the whole image, including the background of the image. This is because the light is bouncing off the walls of the church and lighting the whole scene. A flash on the other hand, will only light a small part of the scene, usually just the bride. The problem with flash is that it will product a lot of hard shadows both on the bride and dress, and also on the background. With flash, you would normally see a big shadow of the bride on the wall in the background. By using available light, you eliminate this shadow. Also, the shadows on the brides face are also very soft.

Now, the biggest problem with available light photography, is that the exposures are usually much longer, and so there is more opportunity for the subjects to move a create a blurred image, thus negating all the advantages. So, you need to let people know that this is a special lighting effect and that they need to stay very still for the exposure. The image shown in the blog, had a shutter speed of a quarter of a second. Photographically speaking, that is a long time. Most exposures will be in the order of a hundredth of a second or more, which will freeze the movement of most subjects (maybe not very active children) and give you a nice pleasing photo as a result.

We need to consider two things to when using available light to get correct exposures. One is, as we mentioned, the shutter speed, and the other of course, is the aperture.

Lets take a look at how a correct exposure works. The shutter speed, in a wedding for instance, will freeze the movement of the subjects, so that the images appear sharp and pleasing to the eye. So, the shutter speed determines how long the light affects the sensor on the camera, and the aperture affects how much light hits the sensor. So the combination of how much light hits the sensor for how long determines by the shutter speed, gives us a correct exposure.

The secondary effects of the shutter speed is the amount of movement shown on the image. A fast shutter speed will show no movement, and a slow shutter speed will cause a blur of the image, either from the movement of the subject or by not holding the camera perfectly steady.

The secondary effect of the aperture is how much of the image is in sharp focus. With either shutter speed or aperture, a lot of people get confused about the numbers involved. The aperture shown on a camera lens is usually shown as f5.6 or f8 etc. The confusing part for many photographers, is that the larger the f number, the smaller the lens opening. But do not let the numbers confuse you. The numbers are only written this way because of space constraints. The number is really a fraction, and every number technically should be written with a one on top of the number. So, f8 is really f and 1 over 8. And f16 is really f 1 over 16, or a sixteenth. What this means is that each stop downs, halves the amount of light coming through the lens.

The effect of closing down the aperture this way, is that the smaller the aperture, the larger the depth of field. In other words, the smaller the aperture, more of the image will appear in focus. So, when shooting portraits, we usually want a shallow depth of field, so that the background does not affect the appearance of the subject. But as we adjust the aperture, by letting more or less light reach the sensor, we have to adjust the shutter speed to allow the light to be on the sensor for a longer or shorter period to make a correct exposure.

Single lens reflex cameras are advanced, high-end cameras favored by professional photographers and amateur enthusiasts. Such photographers gravitate toward SLR cameras because they are faster, take more precise photographs, and are more adaptable.

Have you ever used a film camera and noticed that photo you took is slightly off-center from the image you framed through the viewfinder, especially on close-up shots? This happens because one cannot look through the actual lens of the camera-the shutter and film (or in the case of digital cameras, the image sensor) are in the way. Thus, the viewfinder is off to the side of the actual camera lens, resulting in two slightly different angles of view.

SLR cameras fix this problem by using mirrors and prisms to let the photographer see through the camera lens. It achieves this by lowering a mirror into the lens box. The mirror reflects the image coming through the lens upward into a prism, which in turn bounces the image into the viewfinder. This way, the photographer is able to see exactly what the camera lens is seeing, with the exception of the brief instant when the photograph is being taken.

At this point, the mirror flips up out of the way of the lens box. The shutter opens, exposing the film or image sensor to the light coming through the lens. The picture is captured, the shutter closes, the mirror drops back down, and the photographer can once again see through the viewfinder.

The introduction of digital “point and shoot” cameras changed the game slightly. They also allow the photographer to see exactly what the lens is seeing. They have limitations, however, that some professional photographers feel make them unusable. The main drawback of commercial digital cameras is a considerable lag time between when the photographer pushes the button and when the camera actually captures the image. During these seconds, the camera may be jostled, the angle change, the lens shift out of focus, or the subject being photographed may move. Although perfectly fine for still pictures, photographers who need to capture an image instantly, such as sports, action, or wildlife photographers, the lag time is unacceptable.

A new generation of Digital SLR cameras (DSLR) combine the best of both technologies. They use the SLR mirror system to allow the photographer to see exactly what the lens sees. Simply by replacing the film behind the shutter with a digital light image sensor instead, a DSLR camera is still able to capture images instantly. In this way, a DSLR camera combines the accuracy and speed of an SLR camera with the convenience of digital cameras.

As DSLR cameras are usually high-end machines intended for a professional market, they tend to be more expensive, but also incorporate other advanced features. An average DSLR camera usually includes auto focus options, live preview, electronic flash controls, the ability to swap specialized lenses, and electronic adjustment of the captured digital image, such as optimizing the contrast and color, red-eye correction, and monochrome options, among many others. DSLR cameras also generally have a larger digital image sensor, providing better quality images with a higher pixel resolution, lower noise, and a superior color range. While the price of DSLR cameras make them a financial investment, professional photographers and amateur enthusiasts will consider it well worth it.

Nobody likes to be limited by a budget, especially penny-pinchers like me. But hey, that’s a story for a later discussion. Let’s stick to talking exclusively about digital cameras here, and more importantly Nikon digital SLR cameras. It’s no secret, that Nikon creates many of the best digital SLRs out there, and there are plenty to choose from.

Nikon Cameras are popular for their excellent lens quality which facilitates great pictures. One of it’s most sort-after cameras is the Nikon D90. If you’ve been looking for a high definition video camera, there are many out there for you to choose from. In this article, we will take a look at some of your options available in each of the different formats. HDV JVC, Sony, and Canon all produce HDV cameras of various stripes and abilities.

The JVC HD100U shoots 720p, offers a true 24p frame rate, and provides a professional looking form factor, along with sporting the ability to change out lenses. THE BODY

this is the first slr camera I have owned myself despite having used others. without going into too much detail the body is very good quality with well laid out and easy to understand buttons. I would have like the grip to be a little more chunky particularly when using the exposure lock and AF selection as it can be slightly awkward although I do have large hands and I am probably being a bit picky.

the body of the camera is light and has more than enough features for someone who is just getting into slr photography.

it has several point and shoot modes such as portrait, macro, sport etc as well as a full auto I guess is ok if you happen across something you need to shoot quickly. however you should really try to avoid these auto modes.

luckily the camera has many program modes including shutter and aperture priority modes which once you master will dramatically improve your photos (particularly the aperture mode)

THE LENS

Unfortunately the lens that comes in this kit is not all that great. it is light and it does seem well built (I dropped mine just the other day and its fine) however its a lot slower to focus than the USM lenses canon offers and that can cause problems at times.

photos can appear a little soft unless shot at the narrower aperture (f16 and above really).

the thing that lets the lens down most in my opinion is the ability to knock the background out of focus. you really have to work hard to get a good amount of blur in the background, your gonna struggle to get good results at anything less than the full 55mm focal length at the widest aperture making it a little poor for macro shots, whilst being just ok for portraits. this lens would be satisfactory if you don’t wanna take photography too seriously but it does limit your results.

CONCLUSION

In my opinion the body is well worth the money and comes in cheaper than some of the equivalent nikon cameras.

as for the lens I would suggest buying the body and choosing a separate lens. I have only owned this camera 3 months and I am already wanting to replace the kit lens. look for a canon USM lens or one of sigma image stabilizer lenses

I had researched both Cannon and Nikon cameras when I decided to upgrade to a SLR. I already owned a Rebel 35mm camera and knew what kind of pictures it took, but like the ease of a digital. Came across someone who had a Cannon XT. It looked alot like my 35m. Long story short, I bought the XSi Rebel. It is wonderful. I like that it is easy to use, but gives you professional quality pictures.

The biggest selling point for me was that I could you use my lense from my 35mm. The one thing I wish was available, not necessarily for this camera but for any digital SLR is a guide to lenses and attachments to enhance the capabilities of this great camera. It was a great purchase on my part. I like that the SLRs are available at an affordable price for someone who takes and shares alot of pictures, but not necessarily a professional photographer. However, this camera will make your pictures look professional.

XSi Rebel – Amazing Camera!,

I had a Kodak P880 for 2 years (do NOT order that camera). It never worked properly. I fought with it and struggled and tried to take photos of my family that I usually wound up hating. I finally ordered this Canon. Wow. It is so different than my Kodak. Most of the pictures that I take don’t require any editing, and the camera is so smarter than me that it’s ridiculous. Now if I can figure out how to use the telephoto lens I bought with it, I’ll be all set!

XSi Rebel – Better Than 35 mm, Just Short of 6×6 Cm

I have used 5×7 in., 4×5 in., 6×6 cm and 35 mm formats over the last 30 years, and have developed and printed all my work in my own darkroom (B&W and color). The combination of Canon’s XSi Rebel plus my PIXMA Pro 9000 printer (also purchased through Amazon.com) surpasses the quality and longevity of my color C-prints and Cibachrome in 6×6 cm and 35 mm. Thanks to Amazon for delivery in under the time specified. And thanks to no arguments about stock outages and kit contents, which was so prevalent with several less-than-professional NYC camera outfits over the years, except for B&H Photo, a truly professional supplier.

I don’t think I can add much to what’s already been said about this camera. The cost and the quality of this camera and PIXMA 9000 printer come in far under what my darkroom cost me many years ago–only deliver superior results–with no carcinogenic chemicals.

I also own a Canon A620, which has delivered fantastic results for a small point-and-shoot camera that fits in your pocket.

The next step is to build up my Canon lens selection; I’m converting from being a previous Minolta (35 mm) and Mamiya (6×6 cm) user.

One word of advice: Don’t skimp on the inks and use any cheap stuff other than Canon inks (or OEM inks for the printer you own). After all, permanence is worth paying for–just as the quality print materials you purchased and the archival processing you would have spent hours doing in the darkroom.

Are you looking to start your own photography business or do you simply want to buy new gear in order to replace the current digital camera that you have?  There are a number of different types of digital cameras and it’s important that you get the one that is just right for your.  Some of the important tips that you’ll want to keep in mind are how much money are you willing to spend, what type of functionality are you looking for, and which brand of digital camera are you leaning towards.

Another important tip to keep in mind is which type of functionality are you looking for?  If you’re simply looking to take portraits in a more comfortable setting, then you may be able to get  buy with a point and shoot digital camera which is perfectly capable of fulfilling this need with high quality pictures.  If you’re looking for more professional looking pictures, then you’ll need to upgrade to a SLR or DSLR digital camera which offer a lot of different features that can be used in taking pictures.  Some of these features include panoramic or wide angle lenses, high power zoom, high resolution factors, and much more.  These types of cameras are typically purchased by those that are getting into the photography business in some form or fashion.

The final tip that should be considered when shopping for a new digital camera is to decide if you have a preference in manufacturer and if so, start with that manufacturer.  So if you prefer Nikon cameras, then perhaps you would want to start your shopping excursion with that manufacturer to see if you find the camera that you would prefer most based on your other factors such as budget, and functionality requirements.

I have gained the Camera 450D with 2 kit lenses (18-55mm and 55-250mm), and thus actually a good basic equipment.

First off the camera:

It is beyond the scope, exhaustively list all, for a total of the Camera 450D is already a real miracle. Therefore I will confine myself to points which have struck me particularly.

First there is the image sensor. This is APS-C format, which is slightly smaller than Small. This essentially has the following effects:

A smaller sensor does not take on as much light as a larger, making it at the same resolution is theoretically somewhat greater noise than a full frame sensor. However, an APS-C sensor is still a size of 22.2 x14, 8mm (for comparison, Small or full-frame sensor: 36x24mm). So that is smaller (even smaller than the sensors in Nikon cameras), but if you are honest, especially in comparison to conventional image sensors, compact cameras and even those of Olympus SLRs are still quite large. The advantage of smaller size compared to full frame is first time clearly the price. Here one need only look at an example of Canon’s EOS 5D or 1D models.

The reason why I’m flogging so long on the sensor is that the final choice was for me. The Four Thirds sensor of Olympus (17,3 x13, 0mm) According to my research, provides for a visible but more noise. Since I can not provide a Full frame camera (and I doubt if it is really necessary for my purposes), I feel the sensors of Canon and Nikon outstanding as the best compromise between affordability and real image quality.

And so we were already in the conclusion to the image sensor: As indicated, APS-C is a quite large size and thus in a position to really capture excellent images. Moreover, technological progress does not stop even before image sensors, so that the light sensitivity of today’s APS-C (sensors so old, the Camera 450D is not even) but significantly higher than the much older models.

That the sensor is slightly smaller, in addition to the somewhat more compact design of the camera is another significant effect: the focal length of the mounted lens is extended by a factor of 1.6. Full be extended from the second to the 250mm kit lens also 400mm. This one can stand as you want, I like Tele (or I) would hardly ordered this kit, so I find fine.

– A white balance was not possible with the Praktica. The automatic is on the EOS natural light usually very reliable, the manual is easy to quarrel and help whenever it’s automatic or assaults do not fit the presets () for example, in artificial light.
– The built-in light meter makes photography even more convenient than the separate of the time. One can indeed much closer to target (through the eyepiece and not free) hand
– You can see images immediately rather than days / weeks later and I can just try again, if the picture has become nothing.

To become great with digital cameras all may sound trite, but I would just take pictures as large as with the purely mechanical Praktica on film, knows certain advantages to the digicam, but certainly appreciated. That is what comes with the Camera 450D. To me, it was a dream at last.

In all the great gadgets like LiveView on the LCD, picture styles, and other automatic programs I do not want to dwell. Anyone who chooses a camera for such items should seriously ask themselves whether he really wants to spend all that money for a SLR, or if it does not still a good compact at half price. Also in this area has been done in recent years, amazing.

Much more important is a camera indeed what comes out at the end: the image quality. Since I almost anything manual setting, it was inevitable that the very first recordings under the committee is sometimes. At least my own fault, and then change the corresponding settings. Ultimately, it will always be of great beauty when I got out and then just itself, and not the automatic camera. Thanks to the successful menus and largely very ergonomic layout of the buttons and the wheel settings are quickly made, so that (if a bit familiar with the camera) can make the snapshot. Details such as an incorrect white balance can be with the regular software, the Canon ascribes to correct even retrospectively. The prerequisite is of course that you shot in RAW format. But who buys itself a reflex, to have his pictures on the camera only as a JPEG to have?

When I initially wrote about the image sensor, I mentioned the connection between sensor size and noise performance. Here you can clearly be given all-clear: Up to ISO 400 was on location on the day of rushing anything. From ISO 800, depending on lighting conditions, it is more or less visible. At ISO 1600 is visible especially in artificially strong noise, for prints up to A5, but the images are used to at least. Perhaps even more for larger ones. In natural light, the noise even at ISO 1600 but is still acceptable, although it is somewhat dependent on the colors and the brightness of the faces in the photo.

I also really like the battery: the user base is not easy. If you take the camera into the desert, will assume a more water as the camera of the juice. I think the least- Camera 450D owners will necessarily need a second battery.

Perhaps a few sentences for processing: The case is indeed “only” made of plastic, but it all seems very stable, very firm, grippy, Passig. Plastic should be nothing wrong. No one buys a camera to play with football. If they are the purpose of adequately treated, should keep a camera with plastic as good as a metal casing. Today there are already so good plastics, that the question of metal or plastic is rather an aesthetic. I think the Camera 450D is proof of many of this.

My conclusion to the camera, then, is in this price range will be comparable with other manufacturers may not find hardly anything better.

Since I bought a kit with 2 lenses, I would also like to touch on them.
Since image circle, light intensity, autofocus and image stabilizer lenses are comparable, differ only the focal lengths, I will assess both together.

In my recent experience, they are suitable for outdoor day and long exposures at night equally well. The display quality corresponds almost exactly to what I would have liked for my purposes. Why do I restrict the one on location? With maximum aperture of F3, 5 (standard lens) and F4, 0 (Tele) is the luminous intensity is OK, but just nothing too Thick. In good light it is therefore possible at ISO 200 to 400 also moved well photographed objects.

For very fast movements have to take that higher ISO values, so that one gets when the necessary

I’m a photo enthusiast who’s been using the Canon XSi Rebel for six months now and here are my impressions.

Weight/Handling: First off, the camera is really light. If anyone tells you that this camera is heavy, then they probably never held a full-frame professional DSLR. The light weight makes it a joy to carry around when traveling. However, serious/pro photographers might feel that the small weight and size lend to an unprofessional feel. Also, this is a minor point, but the shutter makes a high pitched noise as opposed to more professional cameras that have a low, unobtrusive noise. This camera doesn’t have too many buttons, as opposed to Nikon cameras. Rather, many of the more specialized functions have to be accessed through menus. Some people will find this very annoying. I personally don’t mind. In addition, if you have big hands, you will have a hard maintaining a comfortable grip on the camera because the grip is rather small. If this is the case, consider purchasing the optional battery grip.

Image Quality: At low ISO settings, the image quality is very good and I actually performed a professional portrait shoot using this camera. The 12 megapixels are enough to get good 8x12inch prints, and in really ideal situations with a good lens, proper lighting, exposure, etc, you might be able to squeeze out 12x18inch prints. At ISO 800 and above, noise does become perceptible and if you use heavy amounts of sharpening, images will appear quite nasty. However, if you stay away from over-sharpening at high ISO’s, a small amount of software noise reduction should take care of most problems. Thus, this camera is not very good in situations with low light AND moving subjects, such as parties. For this reason, I am considering upgrading to the 5D for better noise handling. And remember, image quality has more to do with a good lens than it has to do with a camera’s megapixel number.

Kit Lens: The kit lens is enough to handle basic photographic needs. My personal copy of the lens is very sharp in the center but you might not be so lucky. The focus ring is REALLY TINY and so if you’re a manual focus type of person, you’ll want to find a new lens very quickly. Also, if you want to take pictures of your kids playing sports or indoor pictures with lots of moving people, consider getting a faster lens. For sports, I recommend the 55-250 IS, 70-300IS, or if you can afford it, the 70-200 2.8L. For indoor/low-light photography, consider augmenting your kit with a prime lens such as the 50mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, or if you know about the benefits of the L series of Canon lens, I probably don’t need to refer you to any more lenses.

Other Issues: The on-camera flash is almost completely useless for taking pictures of people in dim lighting. Why? Because Canon’s engineers somehow decided that they should have the flash fire 5-10 quick bursts to assist the camera’s various sensors. Trust me, your subjects will not appreciate your flash firing off like a machine gun in front of their face. I highly recommend an external flash like the 420ex or 430ex if you’re getting this camera to solve that problem. Nikon users will not have to deal with the problem.

Overall Impressions: If you’re just getting into the world of DSLRs or you’re a photo enthusiast strapped for cash (like me), the Canon XSi Rebel is a great choice to start out on and with skilled use, its hardware is capable of achieving very good results. Also, by choosing Canon, you have access to the largest selection of lenses. I’ve taken some great pictures with this camera and I plan to keep it around. However, you might also want to evaluate the Canon 40D and the Nikon D90.
